Troubleshooting Some Of The Most Frequent Summertime Garage Door Issues

When you hit the button on your garage door opener, you automatically expect that it will open or shut on demand. Even though most garage doors will last for many years without problems, sometimes even small changes in the environment can cause problems. This is especially true in the summertime when the temperatures start to rise and bright sunlight can heat the working components of the door. Here are a few of the most common issues that can come up with your garage door in the summer months and what you need to know to get things working as they should.

Problem: The garage door seems to stick and not open smoothly.

Cause and Solution: The excess heat and humidity in the air can mean a slight change in the function of your garage door. Wooden support and framing can expand, meaning that the door may fit just slightly tighter than usual. Plus, the high temperatures can dry out lubrication faster, which means you may have to lubricate more often. Get a high-quality tube of heavy lithium grease that will hold up better, and make sure all moving parts are generously coated to prevent the issue. You cannot prevent the expansion of wooden materials, but you can make sure the parts have a smooth, lubricated, and clean surface for motion.

Problem: The garage door will not close all the way, like there is something in the way.

Cause and Solution: This is actually more of an issue with the garage door opener and its sensors than it is the door itself. The sensors you have in place are designed to detect anything in the way of the garage door and reverse action as a safety precaution. If the sensors are in direct sunlight, or the temperature in your garage is really high, it is not uncommon for these sensors to start to show signs of problems. For example, the garage door may start to close and then suddenly reverse, opening back up. To rectify the problem, move the sensors back away from direct sunlight. If the problem persists, you may have to have new sensors installed.

When you are familiar with what changes can come about with your garage door during the warmer seasons, you will be better prepared to handle issues when they come up. Talk to a garage door repair professional like American Eagle Garage Door Services for advice.

About Me

Dump Trucks, Bulldozers and Cranes, Oh My!

Welcome to my blog. I'm Kara Montgomery. My entire life, I have had an obsession with construction. When I was a little girl, I had a whole set of construction equipment toys I'd play with. As I got older, I read so many books on construction. Even though I didn't follow construction as a career path, this has continued to be something I'm interested in and I thought it'd be fun to create a little blog that covers various construction topics. There is really no specific construction topic this blog will cover, so anyone who has an interest in the construction industry will find something of use.
