Tips On Dealing With A Leaky Pipe On The Weekend

Pipes that are leaking water can cause damage to a home and its contents. When this happens, you will need to contact a plumber as soon as possible. If the incident occurs on the weekend, finding a plumber to deal with the issue may be a problem. In such situations, it can help if you know how to temporarily stop the leak.

Shut off the Water

Anytime you are dealing with a leak, one of the first steps you will need to take is stopping the flow of water to the area. Many times, you can shut water off inside your home by turning off the water valve closest to the leak. Shut off valves are generally found behind the toilet or under the sink.

If water continues to leak, you may need to turn off all water going into the house at the main shut off valve. This valve is generally found near the edge of your property, near the street. Depending on the design of the valve, you may be able to turn a knob or use a wrench to shut the water off. If you are unable to turn the water off, you may need to call your local water company to have it shut off.

Find the Leak

After the water to the home has been shut off, you can begin looking for the section of pipe causing the leak. You can generally follow the water trail to find the area where the leak is coming from.

Make Temporary Repairs

If the leak is coming from an area where pipes connect, sometimes you can tighten the couplings to stop the problem. In addition, you may want to coat the joint with a waterproof epoxy paste.

Leaks that are caused due to a crack in the pipe will generally need to be patched until a plumber can make a permanent repair. Most hardware stores sell kits for this purpose. Some kits contain waterproof tape to be wrapped over the crack. A special epoxy compound is placed over the tape. Kits can also include a self-tapping plug to use to seal up a hole in the pipe.

Another type of leak repair kit includes a rubber pad that can be wrapped around the pipe. This pad is used to cover the cracked pipe. Metal plates are used to clamp the pad to the pipe. This will seal the leak and can generally last a number of days.

Dealing with a leaky pipe can be a difficult job to handle on the weekends when it is difficult to find an emergency plumber. By making a temporary repair, you will be able to use the water in your home until a professional plumber can visit and make a permanent repair.

About Me

Dump Trucks, Bulldozers and Cranes, Oh My!

Welcome to my blog. I'm Kara Montgomery. My entire life, I have had an obsession with construction. When I was a little girl, I had a whole set of construction equipment toys I'd play with. As I got older, I read so many books on construction. Even though I didn't follow construction as a career path, this has continued to be something I'm interested in and I thought it'd be fun to create a little blog that covers various construction topics. There is really no specific construction topic this blog will cover, so anyone who has an interest in the construction industry will find something of use.
